Never shoot in direct sun by aarontyree Never shoot in direct sun by aarontyree
A simple portrait I did of Devon Jade about a month ago. Lacking a "proper" reflector, I used a 2'x4' piece of silver coated polystyrene insulation that i got from home depot for $2 to fill in the shadowed side of her face.
Shot with a older Canon20D and a 50mm 1.8 @f1.8

And then some. I think its one of the few lenses at an entry level price that produces pro level results. The housing is plastic, so you have to baby it a bit for it to last long term, but its an amazing lens. The one that I got from a friend had a broken autofocus, but I found a repair video on youtube, and was able to get it working perfectly.

Hhhmmm, would you say it's also great for mid size to full frame pictures ? I make arrowheads/pendants and have been meaning to work with more people/get a new lens yet haven't fully decided on one!

hm. for that purpose im not sure. do you mean product photography? i think it would work pretty well, but the focus gets sketchy if its closer than about a foot and a half.
I have a 55-250mm macro that was about $150. At 250mm, you can see the details of a nail head from about a meter away. but the aperture is wide open at 5.6 with this one. Which is why i love the 50mm 1.8. you get that great depth of field. i dunno. if you have a specific application situation we could do some quick tests to see what would work better...

Na to do portraits. For example my friend Neelofar took this picture, it's a dark purple heart -

[link]

And for example I took this picture of a small red necklace - [link]

But the way this photo came out, I really like that depth of field, the in focus/outta focus. I have in mind the lens I aim to get for macro, but am on the search for a great portrait lens!

Then for the money, the 50mm 1.8, aka the nifty fifty is nearly impossible to beat. The only thing better IMO is the 50mm 1.2, or the drool worthy 85mm 1.2. But entry level for anything below 1.8 is about 1500 and up. at least for canon. not sure about the nikon world.
